Look out for insurers offering insurance cover for people with pre-existing medical conditions. Avoid travel insurance offers from travel agencies or travel companies as they are usually very expensive. They are unwilling to cover medical conditions and their premiums are correspondingly expensive. It helps to provide a letter from your doctor confirming your fitness to travel. NB It will not be easy to get insurance cover if awaiting treatment or you have just been diagnosed.

Remember the European health insurance card  will cover you for free emergency medical treatment in all the member states of the European Community. Forms are available from the Post Office (allow 3 weeks).
