About Brain Tumour UK
The Bare Facts More than 4,500 adults in the UK are diagnosed with primary brain tumours each year. A further 13,500 people of all ages are diagnosed with a secondary tumour arising from cancers elsewhere in the body. This means that secondary brain tumours affect at least 20 per cent of all cancer patients. Brain tumours now kill more children and young adults than leukaemia.Incidence has increased over the last 30 years, but the prognosis for many patients remains bleak. A child diagnosed with a malignant primary brain tumour has a 60% chance of survival after five years compared to an 85% chance of survival in leukaemia
The impact of a brain tumour, whether it is benign or malignant, can be dramatic. It can cause personality changes, mood swings, intellectual impairment, epilepsy and problems with speech, sight, movement and balance. The effect on patient, family and friends is profound. Yet research is grossly under-funded, and support for those affected is fragmented and inadequate.
Brain Tumour UK volunteers and supporters work steadfastly to address these issues. The charity is led by a strong and balanced Board of Trustees and managed by a full-time salaried director, Jenny Baker OBE.
Much has been achieved in the ten years since the charity’s formation in 1997, and we are setting our sights higher for the next ten years.
